Barkheda Nathu Project... 80% work of the multi-sports complex being built in 100 acres is complete, it was to be ready in 2023
- July 02, 2025
40 percent work of the first phase of the multi-sports complex being built for the last four years at Barkheda Nathu, 10 km from TT Nagar Stadium, is now complete. Its 100 percent work was to be completed in November 2023. This sports complex spread over 100 acres includes athletics stadium, two hockey grounds, tennis court, indoor hall, which has facilities for all indoor sports including badminton, parking, football ground, a grand cricket stadium and equestrian eventing tech. But in the first phase, more focus was given only on athletics stadium and hockey stadium. Then the plan was that it would be inaugurated by hosting the World Athletics. But this could not happen. However, with the first phase half over, the work of the second phase also started. Sports Minister Vishwas Sarang had arrived on Friday to review the construction work, where he expressed displeasure due to lack of proper preparation. He reviewed the athletics stadium, lighting system, practice hockey field, warm-up track, multi-level parking, football fold, water and sewage treatment plant and other construction works. He also saw the presentation of construction details and discussed technical aspects.
Later he said that the completion of this fully equipped sports complex will establish a new dimension for sports in the state. The players here will get all the facilities from training to competitions in the same complex. This will strengthen them to compete at the national and international level.
There is no planning for the cricket stadium right now
Almost all the state capitals of the country have cricket stadiums. Bhopal will be the only capital where there is no cricket stadium. There is a mention of a cricket stadium being built in the third phase of this Charkheda Nathu project. But there is no trace of it on the ground yet. No one is able to say with confidence whether it will be built or not. Actually, the then Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan had announced the construction of a cricket stadium in Bhopal on 30 March 2011. On that day, India had entered the finals by defeating Pakistan in the semi-final of the One Day World Cup. According to that announcement, the cricket stadium was included in the Barkheda Nathu project.
